AC Coil Cleaning

AC Coil Cleaning in Harlingen

A coil packed with dust can’t move heat, so the system runs longer and longer and the house still doesn’t get cold.

What Coil Cleaning Actually Involves

Dirt buildup on a coil steals cooling long before anything breaks. AC coil cleaning in Harlingen is how we get that capacity back, and it’s the cheapest repair on the truck.

It’s an afternoon of work, and it shows up on the next bill rather than three years from now.

Why Valley Coils Load Up Fast

Two things work against an outdoor coil here. Valley dust off the caliche and the fields settles into the fins every dry stretch, and Gulf humidity turns that powder into a paste that grabs the next layer. It builds all season, and it builds on the inside face where nobody can see it.

Salt air makes it worse near the coast. It pits the aluminum, and pitted metal holds dirt the way rough concrete holds dust. The same coil further inland stays cleaner longer, which is why the wash schedule isn’t one number across the Valley.

Indoors the problem is different. The evaporator coil sits wet nine months a year in this climate, and anything the filter misses sticks to it. That damp surface is where biological growth starts. A musty smell at the vents usually traces back to the coil, and filters get changed for a while before anybody opens the panel.

Inside Coil, Outside Coil

The condenser coil is the one outside. Its job is dumping heat into the air, and it does that through hundreds of thin aluminum fins with air pulled across them. Pack those fins with dirt and refrigerant heat transfer slows down. Head pressure climbs, the compressor works harder for less cooling, and the system that was sized for your house is no longer the system you have.

The evaporator coil is the one inside, above or beside the air handler. It absorbs heat out of your house air and pulls moisture out with it. A dirty evaporator restricts airflow, which drops the coil temperature, which is how a system ends up frozen solid on the hottest afternoon of the summer.

How We Clean a Coil

Outside, the cabinet comes apart. We pull the top and rinse from the inside out so the dirt leaves the way it came in, using a coil cleaner rated for aluminum. Fins that got flattened by a weed trimmer get combed back straight before anything goes back together.

The indoor side runs like this:

We finish by reading the temperature split across the coil and confirming the charge, because a clean coil changes how the system behaves and the numbers have to be taken again afterward. The split is the one figure worth writing down. If the cleaning didn’t move it, something else is wrong, and you’ll hear about it that day.

Why Ecotech Gets the Call

Coil cleaning is easy to fake. A rinse from the outside looks the same in a photo and does almost nothing. On our jobs the cabinet comes apart every time, and the panel screws go back in when we’re done. You can look at the inside face of the coil yourself before we close it up.

Eight years serving Harlingen, and an owner who started turning wrenches in 2008. The TDLR license and the insurance are table stakes here. What decides a coil job is whether anybody actually opened the cabinet, and the work carries a satisfaction guarantee. If a cleaning turns up a leak or a failing part, you get the finding and the options the same day.

Coil Work Across the Harlingen Area

Stone Pine systems are young enough that the equipment is fine and the coils are the only thing holding them back. Those units left the crate at a good efficiency rating, and a loaded condenser gives it back within a couple of summers.

Cobblestone Creek is on the route too. Anywhere a condenser sits in the open with a field behind it, the coil takes whatever the wind is carrying that week, and the wash schedule moves up to match.

Closer to the coast the salt does the damage and the dirt just finishes the job. Those coils need a wash more often, and the fins need looking at, because corrosion is what turns a dirty coil into a leaking one.

Book a Coil Cleaning

Spring is the right time, before the system is running most of the day. Call and we’ll get you on the schedule. We’ll tell you on the phone whether your system needs the full cleaning or just the outdoor side, and what that changes about the price and the timing.

Coil cleaning is part of a full tune-up, so if you’re due for AC maintenance anyway it’s better value to book the two together. Preventive care costs less than the repair it heads off, and we’ll say so on the phone.

We’re at (956) 300-2673 weekdays, 8:00 AM to 7:00 PM, and we come back on messages inside a day. Tell us the last time anyone opened that cabinet.

Eight Years on Valley Coil Systems

Ecotech has been cleaning coils in this climate since 2018. There are over 60 reviews on the Google listing, worth a look before you book anyone for work you can’t easily inspect once the panel is back on.

Before and After Shots

Coil cleaning is one of the few jobs where the photo tells the whole story. Dirt packed between the fins in one frame, bright aluminum in the next. Same unit, same visit, and the difference is not subtle.

We shoot every cleaning the same way so you can compare yours against the last one. If your coil looks like the left-hand photo in October, it’s telling you something about how the season went.

Coil Questions

You ask. We answer

How often should Harlingen coils be cleaned?

Once a year for most homes here, and the outdoor coil twice a year if you’re near the coast or backed onto an open field. Cooling season runs about nine months in the Valley, so a coil here loads up far faster than the same unit would in a milder climate.

What drives the price of a coil cleaning in Harlingen?

Access, mostly. An outdoor condenser wash on a unit you can walk up to is a short visit. An indoor evaporator coil in a tight attic means pulling a panel, working on your knees and flushing the drain line, which takes a lot longer. Doing both at once costs less than two separate trips.

Can I clean the condenser coil myself with a hose?

A gentle rinse from the outside won’t hurt anything, and it also won’t do much. Dirt enters from the outside face, so it has to be pushed back out the way it came, which means opening the cabinet. Pressure washers are the real risk. They flatten fins and turn a cleaning into a repair.

What is the difference between the two coils?

The condenser coil sits outside and releases heat. The evaporator coil sits indoors at the air handler and absorbs it. They get dirty in completely different ways, the outdoor one from dust and grass, the indoor one from whatever slips past the filter onto a permanently damp surface.

Do dirty coils really raise my electric bill much?

Yes, and it’s the quiet kind of cost. Nothing breaks, the system just runs longer for the same result, so high bills show up before any symptom does. Efficiency loss on a dirty coil is gradual enough that it’s easy to blame on the weather. The SEER2 rating on the data plate assumes a clean coil.

Do you clean air ducts or dryer vents as well?

No. We clean coils and drain pans, and we repair, seal and install ductwork, but duct cleaning and dryer vent cleaning aren’t services we offer. A lot of the calls we get about dirty ducts turn out to be a loaded evaporator coil, so it’s worth telling us what you’re smelling before you book anyone.

Is a coil cleaning a quick visit or a half day?

The outdoor coil is usually an hour or two, depending on how loaded it is and how the cabinet comes apart. Add the indoor coil and the drain line and you’re looking at half a day. Attic air handlers take longer than closet units because everything happens on your knees.

Will cleaning the coils fix a Harlingen system that ices up?

Sometimes, and it’s the first thing to rule out. A dirty evaporator restricts airflow and a restricted coil freezes. If the ice comes back after a cleaning and a fresh filter, low refrigerant is the usual cause, and that means a leak search.

Did you know?

Caliche dust and pollen pack a Valley condenser faster than most owners expect, and you’ll feel it in the cooling before you see it on the fins.
