What It Actually Does
The compressor is the pump at the middle of the loop. It takes low pressure refrigerant vapor coming back from the house, squeezes it hot and dense, and pushes it out to the condenser where the heat leaves the system. Everything else in the box is there to help it do that. No compressor, no heat transfer, and what you own is an expensive fan with a thermostat.

The compressor itself is a sealed unit, so it gets replaced rather than rebuilt. What often gets repaired is the thing that was killing it, and on plenty of calls that’s all the system needed. A hard start kit can also give a hesitating compressor easier starts on an older unit.
The spread is wide because the diagnosis changes the job. A capacitor or contactor is a parts and labor call. A compressor swap means recovering refrigerant, brazing in the new unit, pulling a vacuum and recharging by weight. Warranty status changes it again. We quote once we know which one it is.
Parts coverage varies by manufacturer and usually depends on the system having been registered at install. We pull the model and serial off the data plate and check the coverage before quoting, because a covered part changes the repair or replace math completely. Bring the paperwork if you kept it.
